Christmas
It has been a week since my last entry. Why? A myriad of reasons - power supply, a really sluggish and annoying internet connection on a supposed broadband speed - dial up is faster, let me tell you. Also, a cold that turned out to be, as usual, a thoroughly miserable experience. Why do colds make you feel like you're going to die and soon? All that misery from being congested, sweaty (and yet unable to use the air conditioning) and feeling like someone is driving a freight train round and round in your head? It just makes you want to curl up and die! And "writer's block" - very simply, nothing came to mind. Guess I was too steeped in the melancholy of misery and wallowing in the self pity that comes with brief and minor illnesses.
Anyway, cold is gone, banished by time and copious amounts of chicken pepper soup, fiery enough to totally singe not just the taste buds but your entire digestive system. No, I did not take extra doses of vitamin C. It's a myth that taking higher doses of C help the cold along it's miserable way (your body just takes the daily need and pisses out the rest. Sorry!) It MAY keep the cold away (that's why you have had a cold only twice as opposed to a possible TEN times, eh) by boosting your general immunity but once you've caught one of over a million strains of the virus, nothing really helps. But, I stuck with my daily dose - it helped that the tablets are nice and chewable and tangily sweet.
I still have the writer's block but power supply is greatly improved - though the air conditioners have conked out from the sheer fatigue of trying to keep up with the power fluctuations and the demand for cool air. Which is almost a necessity in the current temperatures we are experiencing. And who can think properly in those conditions?
Christmas is here again - tis the season to be jolly, blah blah blah. What does Christmas REALLY signify? I used to think, when I was a kid, that it was a time for new clothes & shoes and special dishes of fried rice, turkey and as many extra helpings of dodo (fried plantain) as I wanted.
Then I grew up and was taught by the church that it was a time to be thankful for the birth of our saviour, Jesus Christ. My father made sure to explain that only the Christians held that opinion (which is still the case today). He always made sure to let us know that there were different angles to everything.
And with age, I have come to realize that Christmas means different things to different people. In our society, Christmas has come to mean a mad frenzy of purchases, expenses - for example, travel to the village and spending everything one has worked for during the year - and the exceptional weight gain that comes with the endless brunch/lunch/dinner visits and the way all control is thrown aside as we spend the better part of one week consuming calories that would usually take us a couple months to consume!
The result is that, come January, we are plagued by indigestion, flatulence and/or diarrhea, too-tight clothes, a staggering hole in our bank balance (which, frankly was not really balanced to begin with and now we have CREDIT CARDS!!) and a very real sense of panic as to how we will get through to pay day. The only thing that increases is our girth, and we will work it out in the gym...but, wait, we cant afford the gym subscription!
Merry Christmas!!!
