After the Vacation
Went off for a month to the UK and the US of A for a family holiday. "Family holiday" is what everyone else calls it. Hubby & I call it the kids' holiday. Hubby says the kids were on holiday with their nannies - us!
The kids are 32 months and 14 months respectively, so you have an idea of how much "holidaying" the parents did. My daughter, who I have nick-named "Queen" and "Commander-of-the-universe" does not like to be told "no" or refused anything. And she believes that our sole duty as parents is to make sure her every command and decree are carried out. My son (14 months), on the other hand, has no imperial bone in his body. He will simply deck you or cry you into submission. Once he gets his way, you get the most beatific smile as a reward. Plus, he will say "t'nk you"!
I had the most interesting roles - mummy, nanny, house keeper, house maid, cook, chauffeur, doctor, nurse, wife, valet, personal shopper. For Nigerian women out there looking to lose 3 to 6 kg in the space of 4 weeks without going to the gym, a "family" holiday with toddlers is the answer. I lost 3 kg without thinking about it and another 1 by watching what I ate!
Hubby needed to rest, but not sure how much rest he got!
How did the kids do on the planes? The long haul flights were great - they both slept most of the time. However, the short haul flights had me wondering what I was thinking and secretly thinking that maybe some phenergan at the beginning of the journey would have helped! And I am usually totally against giving kids medication before flights.
As for the car rides, I thank God that I have kids who just conk out once the car is in motion. With my son, it's like switching off a light - no gradual drowsiness for him, oh no. One minute he's babbling, the next he's softly snoring! My daughter, in her queenly manner, gently nods off - first she snuggles into the side of her car seat - and quietly contemplates the passing scenery. She may make a few comments; in Visalia, California, she observed that all the trees were "broken" - it was winter and most of the trees were devoid of leaves.
Will I do this again? Oh, yes, not just anytime soon. I shall wait till they are both older - probably in about 18 months. In the meantime, Daddy & Mummy need a holiday of their own, preferably a really quiet place off the tourist track where one can languish in the silence and peace and get thoroughly bored by the lack of activity and as such be forced to spend most of the time dozing. Yes, there will be a gym, otherwise all the weight Mummy lost shall gallop right back and bring it's friends and family!!!
