So. Who has not felt disappointment? I do not know anyone who hasn't. Even babies, though they may not understand it, experience disappointment - the newborn hopes that it's skin will not be exposed even though a change of diaper is needed; it is disappointed - mummy fails to meet that hope because she has no intention of leaving a stinky diaper in place.
By age 2, disappointment is a familiar human emotion as the toddler, by its very nature, always expects and hopes to get anything he or she wants, which at that age is everything s/he sets her/his sights on. And do those expectations get met, those hopes realized? No, not if the parents and care givers are intent on raising a well mannered and adjusted human! As the human child grows, her path to adulthood is littered with expectations and hopes, realistic or otherwise, and not all are met - the roller blades wished for at age 7 that mom & dad did not get; the hope of dating that dream girl/boy - s/he doesn't reciprocate the feelings; the school the child hoped to get into rejected the application; and so the story goes.
Disappointment is a very strong emotion and shapes us in ways we cannot imagine. It may make us unable to believe, unable to trust, unable to connect. Does it make us stronger or weaker; better off or worse off?
Disappointment goes hand in hand with expectation or hope, two very powerful emotions that can affect the way we live. Without expectation and hope, there can be no disappointment. It seems simple and obvious, does it not, that to avoid and escape disappointment, one simply should have no expectations and no hopes. That would make life less painful, definitely. Now, this not having any hope/expectations is different from despair which is a LOSS of hope. I'm talking about an ABSENCE/LACK of expectations and hope.
But, as it is said, hope springs eternal. No matter how many times you've been "beat on, knocked down", you keep hoping. Which sounds pretty pathetic, doesn't it? I mean, what's the point of hoping or expecting when you 99.9% KNOW that it's a vain hope/expectation?
What say you?
