A letter to my daughter
To my Darling Daughter,
By the time you read this letter, I may or may not still be here - that's up to our Creator.
If I am, then you can ask me more questions and I hope I will have the answers; if I am not here, then I hope that the answers to whatever questions you may have can be found in the things I have not said but have implied.
You came into my life at a time I believed I would not be blessed with you. I had thought that the joy and love you would bring was never to be mine - it was a fate I was just beginning to accept. And then, God, whose ways are canny and unclear, sent you to me. Like a gentle breeze, you swept away the cobwebs of my loneliness. And from the first day I saw you, and until the day I die, I will always thank the good Lord for the gift of you.
You have brought me untold joy, abundant love and many moments of wonder. I hold you in my arms and the sheer wonder of having you moves me to tears. What will my life be like without you? I pray the good Lord, that as you read this letter that I would have been the mother you needed, the friend you will always have and the companion & confidante that will never fail you.
As you grow, you will be faced with many challenges and you shall have many triumphs. There shall be people who will be good to you and others who will not be. People will take advantage, or try to; friends may turn out not to be friends and enemies might not be who you thought them to be. You will love and be loved, hurt and be hurt. Things will happen that will make you wonder at the ignominy of the human race; others will make you marvel at the nobleness of fellow earthly inhabitants.
Through this all, to thyself be true. Be yourself; do not be like many who pretend to be who they are not. Do not be afraid to love, for though there will be some who will not deserve your love, there will be those whom you will not be able to love enough, and there are some that no matter how much you love them, it will never be enough.
As your Aunty O always says, hold God by the waist! His mercy is everlasting and His love knows no bounds.
I wish I could tell you that your life will be easy, that you will never feel pain, that everything you want will always be yours. I can't and I am glad I can't because an easy, pain-free life where you get everything you want won't help you become the person you are meant to be. However, I can tell you I will do everything God allows me do to ensure that I help you become the person God has meant you to be.
I love you, my baby girl, my "Mama".
