Do you know where you're going to?
Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to?
Do you know?
Do you get what you're hoping for?
When you look behind and there's no open doors.
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?
Diana Ross asks those questions in one of her songs.
The song makes me wonder if I really know where I am going. And if and when I get what I'd been hoping for, is it what I really wanted and if it is not, is there a way of going back (when you look behind and there's no open doors - YUP!!)
I must say, personally, I no longer have a definite idea of where I am going to. I used to though. I can say I know where I WANT to go, but that I KNOW for sure? I cannot say that, not anymore.
See, we have all these plans for ourselves, for our lives, for our loved (and unloved, heh heh heh!) ones. Go to school (or get an education - different from going to school o!) get married (or not), have kids (or not), be rich (don't really know anyone whose plan is "be poor" - not counting nuns and monks) be successful (again, no-one plans "be a failure"). Generally, we plan to have the Midas Touch, right? A great thing to have.
A small deviation - Let's talk about this "Midas Touch." It is used to depict success. A person who has this "touch" turns everything into a successful, money making venture.
Greek mythology has it that King Midas was a king of Phrygia (now a part of Turkey) who was granted his wish, by Dionysus a Greek deity, to possess the power of transmuting whatever he touched into gold. Which, initially was great. Everything he touched became gold and that meant he increased his wealth at will. Wonderful, right?
Not! He could not eat - everything turned into gold upon his touch, remember? And he turned his beloved daughter into gold too. The Rich also Cry (anyone remember that programme?)
Lucky for him, Dionysus let him wash away his "golden touch" in a nearby river. He was lucky, he had an open door.
So, back to our plans for ourselves. Plans should be flexible, right?
Example. Your life plan was to make money from being a best selling recording artiste whose vocal prowess is near unparalleled. One teensy weeny problem - you cannot sing worth shit! That plan needs serious flexibility nah! If you stick to that plan, poverty and disappointment will be understatements in the description of your situation.
I think it is the inflexibility in plans that get us into trouble. That causes us to stumble or be stumped when things do not go according to our set plans, in our set direction.
If you are certain you know where you are going, and you are happy, or think you are (those are two different things, I hope you know that) that is great. And I envy you that conviction.
For the rest of us who either don't know or think we do but are not sure, or are still struggling with what direction we should be going and what destination we should have, hang in there.
You are not alone!
Have a great week.
